The Pillar of Our Family: Remembering Uncle Ochendo
Dear Uncle Ochendo,
Words cannot express the depth of my emotions as I write this letter to you. Even though you departed from this world on May 3rd, 2024, your presence remains vivid in my heart and mind. You were more than an uncle to me; you were a mentor, a father figure, and a guiding light. Your attentiveness and thoughtfulness always made me feel valued and understood.
I will never forget how you would call me, sometimes at odd hours, just to check on my well-being. Those early morning conversations, sometimes as early as 6 a.m., are moments I will always treasure. Your advice to “always stay focused and keep saying your prayers” has become a rule of thumb that guides me daily. These moments, though small, have left a lasting impact on me, reminding me of the simple yet profound wisdom you carried.
One of my fondest memories is our trip in 2013 to Abatete with my late father. Despite the unexpected detour due to the early quirks of Google Maps, you remained calm and composed. Driving through that partially graded road for two hours could have been frustrating, but your positive spirit turned it into an adventure. Your courage and patience taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability. That day, I learned that the road ahead, no matter how uncertain, can always be faced with grace and a positive attitude.
Our days in Abuja are etched deeply in my memory. Driving around together in my simple, non-air-conditioned car, visiting building sites during the construction of Sandralia Hotel—you walked briskly through each room and hallway with such energy and meticulous attention to detail. You considered every input I made, despite your years of experience. Your passion for excellence was truly inspiring, and it made me strive to be the best version of myself, no matter the task at hand.
You had a sweet tooth that matched your sweet nature. Sharing cakes, chocolates, and candies wasn’t just about enjoying the treats; it was a reflection of your generous spirit. Watching Arsenal matches with you, sitting right in front of the TV on a dining chair, was always a lively affair filled with subtle discussions and shared excitement. These shared moments, filled with laughter and connection, have left me with cherished memories that warm my heart even now.
Your dedication to staying informed always impressed me. Reading the national dailies every day and keeping up with the Abatete Development Organization’s latest news through the WhatsApp platform demonstrated your commitment to community and culture. You made it a point to attend important occasions—child dedications, weddings, funerals, and more—sometimes juggling multiple events in a single day just to honor those who invited you. Your sense of duty and loyalty to others never ceased to amaze me.
Professionally, your accomplishments were monumental. Serving as the Permanent Secretary and the first Director General of the FCTA and FCDA, you were instrumental in extending Abuja’s master plan. Your efforts didn’t just shape a city; they created opportunities for countless individuals, including helping many secure land for shelter and finance for their education and businesses. You built not just structures but futures, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and growth for generations to come.
Your faith was a cornerstone of your life. As a Knight of St. Mulumba and St. Sylvester, you were a pillar in the Catholic Church. Building a church in Abatete and contributing to numerous religious and community projects showcased your devotion and generosity. The University Tower at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, built in honor of your parents—my beloved grandparents—stands as a testament to your love for family and the academic world. You built bridges between heaven and earth through your selfless service and deep devotion.
After my father passed away, you seamlessly stepped in as a father figure without hesitation. You ensured my business thrived and that our family remained safe. Your constant check-ins, guidance, and support meant the world to me. You taught me the importance of humility, focus, and the value of hard work. In moments when I felt overwhelmed, your wisdom and steady hand were there to guide me, reminding me that no challenge was insurmountable.
You were like a mighty oak tree, with branches spreading wide to provide shade and shelter to many. You were fondly called Ochendo, a name that followed and extolled your virtues. Your silent achievements and the lives you touched are a legacy that words can scarcely capture. You brought our family together, caring not just for our immediate relatives but extending your kindness to the extended family and community. Your generosity and strength were the roots that held us all together.
As I reflect on your remarkable life, I am filled with both sorrow for your absence and gratitude for your presence in my life. You taught me so much—not just through your words, but through the way you lived your life with integrity, compassion, and unwavering faith. Your life was a living example of what it means to truly care for others, to give without expecting anything in return, and to stand firm in the face of adversity.
I want you to know that I will strive to keep your light burning bright, to live by the principles you’ve instilled in me, and to honor your memory in all that I do. I will carry forward the lessons you taught me, living each day with the grace and dignity you embodied. Your legacy is a guiding light that will continue to inspire me and many others.
Thank you, Uncle Ochendo, for everything you’ve been to me. I miss you dearly, but I find comfort in knowing that your spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you. Rest in peace, dear uncle. Your life was a blessing, and your memory will forever be a treasure.
With all my love and deepest respect,
Your Nephew,
Stanley IK Oranika
