CHIEF(SIR) GORDIAN CHUKWUEMEKAORANIKA(OCHENDO): THE TRANSITION OFARELIGIOUS AND GODLYMAN – MY HUMBLE TRIBUTE.
It is often difficult to do a tribute of a great man. I will hazard everything and do the
instant one. I have to!. I heard the name of Chief (Sir) G.C. Oranika first from the
Late Chief Fidelis Omenka. The Late Chief Fidelis Omenka was a native of Ukpo,
Dunukofia Local Government, but his mother hailed from Achala, Agbaja Abatete.
As a young lad, Chief Fidelis Omenka lived mainly at Achala and got acquainted
with Chief (Sir) G.C. Oranika and others, in the days of yore, Chief Fidelis Omenka
was popularly known in Abatete as Fide Achala. One of his readily and notable Nna
Ochies in Achala now is Mr. Augustine Arinze alias Akumo, my Age Grade
member.
I saw Chief (Sir) G.C. Oranika first in 1995, at the burial of my beloved father, the
Late Chief Nnanyelugo Thomas Omaliko Morah. Incidentally it was Chief Fidelis
Omenka that introduced me to him. I bowed with obeisance and said Ochie,
wherein he patted my back and said Oke Nwadiana. Through the instrumentality of
Chief Digwe Sunday Ugenyi Okonkwo, Chief (Sir) G.C. Oranika’s beloved
brother-in-law, I did some legal jobs for Ochendo, all to his satisfaction.
When I was the Chairman, Harvest and Bazaar Committee of St. Dominic Catholic
Church, Abatete, I went to Ochendo and invited him accordingly. He assured me of
his presence and told me the time he will be at the venue. When I intimated the then
Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Peter Okolo, he couldn’t believe me. On the day in question,
at about 4.10p.m., Ochendo arrived with his entourage comprising of the Late
Chief (Sir) Laz Iloka (Ichie Oganiru), Chief (Sir) Emeka Aroh (Ogene Abatete) and
Chief Digwe Sunday Ugenyi Okonkwo, I went to the said
Parish Priest and told him that Ochendo had come. He was astonished. That was
what happened! Ochendo and his entourage purchased so many items of property
and made me proud.
On my becoming the President of Agbaja Abatete Community Association
(AACA), I was given a petition from Ogwugwuani Community, Agbaja Abatete.
The bone of contention was Ekeagu Market, where the Community maintained
stoically that 50% (Fifty Per Centum) of the royalty must go to them. I pleaded with
the Community and Youth levels to soft-pedal, pontificating in strong terms that
Umudunu, Ezimuku, Ifite and Eziora Villages donated their pieces or parcels of
land for St. Dominic Catholic Church, Abatete, burial ground and Nkwo Agbaja
Market, respectively. They couldn’t budge. With the financial assistance of our
Agbaja people, I had planned to modernize Ekeagu Market, but I saw my humble
self in a big quandary. I caused the issue of Ekeagu Market to be handled and
decided by the Obi Agbaja-in-Council, headed at the time by the Late Chief B.O.
Obiefuna, Ezinaeliaja II. I got some sort of breather by this singular act.
I summoned the meeting of AACA Exco. I told the Exco members that we would
go round Abatete and inspect the Health Centres cum Health Posts as well as the
bad roads in Agbaja then. I told my good friend, Mr. Joseph ‘Akataka’ Onwujekwe,
to come along with his bus on the appointed day for us to go round. I equally invited
Chief Ikukuoma Sylvester Ofodile, a notable Engineer, to accompany us. As we
were going round, at Oye Ezigiwe, we saw Nsukwu Abatete’s Health Centre, which
was good, but I promptly, there and then, told Engineer Sylvester Ofodile to give
me plan far better than that of Oye Ezigwe, Nsukwu. At Oye Ezigwe, I told the
AACAExco members that Agbaja would have a very nice Health Centre. In no too
distant time, Engineer Ofodile furnished us with the Building Plan and the Bill of
Quantity. Everything was good and the House was hilarious and bustling. I directed
the then Secretary of AACA, Prof. IK Okodo, to move vote of thanks and keep the
documents safely, which he did. That was the first step towards making Agbaja
Health Centre come to fruition.
We had series of consultations and I was informing Ochendo everything. I made up
my mind that Agbaja Health Centre must be kick-started and based on that, we had
Emergency General Meeting of AACA, which meeting heralded the moving of the
motion by Mr. Cyril Okpala to commence the construction of Agbaja Health
Centre. We all agreed in unison to do it. We started the project with little above
N400,000.00 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira), which was the money we had at the
time. All the Age Grades in Agbaja contributed compulsorily except the exempted
2
Age Grades. Even at that, Umuofu Age Grade, led at the time by my immediate
predecessor, Chief Nnabuenyi Emma Okoye, contributed theirs. I used my
handsets to call Agbaja people far and near for financial assistance. I called
Ochendo to come and inspect our work. He told me when he would be at Abatete.
That was the time Christ The King Parish, Abatete, was under construction. He told
me specifically that he would be at Nkwo Agbaja at 9.30a.m. on that particular day
to inspect the Health Centre under construction before going to CKP, Abatete. We
got prepared for him and I notified sundry persons. He came at the appointed time
and after inspection he donated humongous sum of money. There and then, I
started singing Ochendo, Ochendo, Ochendo we shall follow, whether he was
working or eating, we must follow him. All of us including Ochendo were dancing
and photographs were taken. It was a joyous moment. I did hand over the pictures
to my successor, Prof. IK Okodo. He ought to have handed over the pictures to his
successor, Chief Ugonna Anny Ekunie. No doubt, that money and other monies we
realized would have completed the Health Centre, but President Buhari’s economic
policies, which I termed Buharinomics brought hyper inflation, which in turn
ushered in recession in Nigeria. At any rate, that humongous amount and other
monies helped my administration to do 95% (Ninety Five Per Centum) of the work.
As at now, Agbaja Health Centre is the best in Abatete and beyond. I am still very
grateful to Nuway Management team that completed the all-important project, Our
people and outsiders are benefitting therefrom. That had been my sole intendment.
Chief (Sir) Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika was not only religious, but Godly. If
he did anything for you, no other person will hear it. So many people, whom I call
charlatans and turncoats, will vividly like to publicize their assistance to people in
the beer parlours or public places. Such people are not men and women of valour.
There was a day I was with Ochendo in his Abatete sitting room. He was sipping
heineken beer, while I was sipping star beer. I told him point blank that I was
observing some elements of similarity in his behavoural pattern with that of my
father. He smiled and said Nwadi, how was Morah behaving. I told him promptly
that he never told us the people he assisted financially or otherwise. The people,
some of them, themselves were telling us. He smiled again and told me that that
was the best way to go. One night during the time under review at about 11.25p.m.,
my good friend, Chief Ezenwafor Chris Ngwudike, the former President General
of ADO called me. He told me he was at Abuja, that they were celebrating
3
Ochendo. I demanded details. He told me that Ochendo donated a piece or parcel of
land to ADO, Abuja Branch, to erect Abatete Town Hall, but for several years it was
still under construction, that made Ochendo to take up everything and completed
the structure. I was very, very happy and intimated Ezenwafor that I will call
Ochendo the next day and congratulate him. When I called Ochendo at 8.30a.m.
the next day, I greeted him and we exchanged pleasantries. I then said Ochie,
congratulations for completing Abatete Town Hall, Abuja. He said Nwadi, who
told you! I told him that the President General of ADO, Chief Ezenwafor Chris
Ngwudike, told me. He told me it was true, wherein I said to him multiple
congratulations and may the Almighty God continue to afford him robust health.
Some years back, I wanted Ochendo, if possible, to come and inspect two
respective properties at Onitsha, so as to know whether he would purchase them.
On the appointed day, Ochendo came with Digwe Ugenyi Okonkwo. We went to
the one along Old Market Road, Onitsha. After inspecting it, it was very clear as
crystal that he did not like same. We all went to the second one near the Area
Command, Nigeria Police, Onitsha. The piece or parcel of land was sixteen plots at
the time. After inspecting it, Ochendo said Nwadi, I will buy it, I will send money. I
had secured all the documents of title, both from the vendor and the Lands
Department, Awka. The next day, Ochendo showed disinterest to purchase the said
piece or parcel of land. I was shocked, to say the least, but I knew what happened.
As a good man Ochendo was, he called me after three days and said Nwadi, I knew
you spent some money in running around to get the documents of title and all that.
He then told me to send my bank account details to him. I did and Ochendo
transferred to me huge sum of money I did not anticipate. Here was a man of
conscience, religious and Godly in all material particular. Ochendo really touched
the lives of so many people positively. He empowered so many people. He never
stoked the fire of division and rancour. He maintained his taciturnity and
loquacious till the end. He was epitome of consistent patriotism, service, humanity,
humility and godliness. He carried himself with the élan of a liberator of the
downtrodden.
He was a man of integrity and he flew integrity kite conscientiously without any
blemish whatsoever. He built over the years a wide range of solid bridges of
understanding, philanthropy and comradeship among peoples of varying degrees
4
of persuasions and ideological inclinations. He was not known to be making
fantastic promises he would not fulfil. At this juncture, my mind goes to the poem,
“Give us Men” by Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) –
“God give us Men! Men from every rank, Fresh and Free and
Frank. Men of thought and reading, Men of light and leading,
Men of loyal breeding; Men of faith and not of fiction, Men of
lofty aim in action; Give us Men – I say again, Give us Men”.
Indeed, without being immodest, Chief (Sir) Gordian Chukwuemeka
Oranika (Ochendo) was a Man. He believed that a life led in the service of
God and humanity is a most meaningful life. With God on his side, he saw
tomorrow vividly and aligned himself with the principle of Mohith Agadi,
who opined that “environment was not asking us to conserve her for her,
but for our future generation”. At all times, he had certain determination
and disposition that caught the curiosity and attention of many people. His
strength of character is still one of the traits people must emulate from this
extra-successful trailblaizer – consistency, loyalty, stoicism, Godliness,
patience and maturity in stupendous abundance. Ochendo was a diplomatic
rock star by all standards. Ochendo was a courteous and cerebral man who
deserved giving credit always. He earned deserved plaudits from our
intelligentsia and hoi-polloi. It is certain, Ochendo had a cast iron reputation
of moral uprightness. He was self-actualized, firm, decisive, focused and not
easily disoriented – a man of great depth, vision and managerial acuity.
According to Robert A. Heinlein – “Love is that condition in which the
happiness of another person is essential to your own”. No doubt, in his
Odyssey, Ochendo encountered adversity, as the case may be, but he saw
same as a teacher and learnt useful lessons therefrom. Ochendo seemed to be
saying thus –
“ I get excited when I put smiles on the faces of people, especially
the poor. I feel happy when I empower people — my natural
passion to present myself as the ladder that people need to climb to
the top. It is my hobby to make people smile”.
5
Chief (Sir) Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika (Ochendo) has gone to his Creator,
his Maker, but his legacies shall live and endure. I pray that the Almighty God will
comfort his beloved wife, children, relations and spread His wing of protection
over them. Many people will miss Ochendo. I will definitely miss him. May our
Good Lord cause his kind and gentle soul to rest in perpetuity in His bosom. Amen.
Kachifo.

TRIBUTES TO A LEGEND
It was a sad moment when we received the news of the transition of
Chief G. C. Oranika the Ochendo 1 of Abatete. Please accept our
deepest sympathy.
Ochendo lived an exemplary life that was worthy of emulation. His
simplicity and philanthropic gestures were above board. His exit was a
loss not only to your family but also to humanity. But that is life…….
No matter how good a man is, nature must still take its course. Since we
as finiters cannot explain infinity and the dynamics of life those left behind should continue from where he stopped. He lived a life that one
would encourage his upcoming generation to emulate.
On behalf of Chuks and Chinwe Nnalugha and the entire Nnalugha

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

A Tribute to Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika (Ochendo Abatete)
Daddy,
From the moment I met you, you welcomed me with a warmth that made me feel like family in every way. You didn’t just accept me as a niece-in-law; you took me in as your own child. You treated me with such love, dignity, and kindness, embracing me with a heart so big and generous that it seemed endless. I quickly came to understand why everyone held you in such high regard—you were truly one of a kind.
Your selflessness was unlike anything I had ever known. You gave so much to those around you, expecting nothing in return. Whether through a kind word, thoughtful guidance, or unwavering support, you lifted others with a love that was quiet yet powerful. Your thoughtfulness touched every interaction; there was never a moment when I didn’t feel your genuine care and interest in my well-being. You had a unique way of making everyone feel valued, seen, and appreciated.
I am deeply grateful for the impact you’ve had on my life. Your kindness, generosity, and compassion have left an imprint on my heart that I will carry forever. You showed me that true strength lies in humility, and that love is in the small, everyday gestures of care and understanding. Your life was a gift to all of us, a shining example of what it means to live with grace and purpose.
Rest in peace, Daddy. Go well, Ochendo Abatete. You lived fully, loved deeply, gave selflessly, and uplifted everyone around you. You will forever be remembered, not only for the life you led but for the lives you touched.
Thank you for everything. I will never forget you.

TRIBUTE TO SIR G. C. ORANIKA OCHENDO ABATETE
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints
Ps. 116.15
Ochendo answered the call from our Lord on 3rd May 2024, three days after his 89th
birthday. Yes, Death opened the Gate of Heaven to our own G.C.; the gentle, cool, humble
philanthropist. Since then, it has been difficult for me to do a well-deserved TRIBUTE to this
colossus of a man; this great and exceptional man. However, while at church recently, I
stumbled on the 5th stanza below of this song in the Catholic hymnal dedicated “For All the
Saints – sine nomine”
For All Unnamed Saints:
The golden evening brightens in the West. Soon to faithful warriors come
their rest. Sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed.
The words struck me as apt and spurred me to begin.
Ochendo is an unnamed Saint yet with a song already composed in his honour and
that of those like him who are Saints even when they are still around us. This reminds me
again of the passage from the Book of Revelation:
Blessed are those who die in the Lord. Blessed indeed the Spirit says;
Now they can rest forever after their work since their good deeds go
with them.
Rev. 14:13 – 14
During my first year at the University of Ibadan, I heard of Ochendo, then a student at
Edinburgh, Scotland from his late younger brother, George who was my age mate. On
graduation from Edinburgh, Ochendo joined the Nigerian Diplomatic Service and was posted
to London, UK until 1967 when he became a foundation member of the Biafran Diplomatic
Service. I joined the Nigerian Diplomatic Service in 1971 to follow his footsteps.
After the Civil War, God repositioned him in the Federal Home Service where he rose
to become the Director General (Permanent Secretary) of the Ministry of Federal Capital
Territory. In this capacity he became of greatest service to God and humanity.
Some people are extraordinary in mind, kindness, empathy and above all in
philanthropy and humility. All the tributes to him today revolve around this same theme: how
good he was to all and sundry irrespective of age, gender, tribe or religious persuasion. He
touched many lives.
Ochendo has been my Mentor and Role model. I have been close to him all these
years, literally “under the shadow of his wings”, marveling at but attracted to him. How could
a man be so cool, unruffled and humble? His residence is home to me. His dear wife and
lovely children seem to realize that I am specially and genuinely attracted to this awesome
MAN. They take me and my family as one of their own.
In retirement we enjoyed the occasions we spent together in his living room
exchanging views on national and international affairs over light drinks. This is what I’d miss
most. My greatest joy is that his viaticum was perfectly arranged by God Himself. He received
the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist shortly before his Transformation.
My Catholic faith teaches me this much and I believe in it. We pray that God Almighty give
him kind admittance into His heavenly kingdom where someday we all hope to be reunited
to enjoy forever the fullness of this Glory through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Eternal Rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May God
grant his dear wife and family the fortitude to bear this great loss.

A Tribute to Our Beloved Uncle
We gather to celebrate the life of a remarkable man—our uncle, who was more than just family; he was a guiding light, a source of kindness, and a wellspring of wisdom. His presence brought joy to every gathering.
Uncle Gordian had a unique way of making everyone feel special. Whether it was through his generosity or the way he listened intently to our dreams and worries, he had a gift for connecting with people. He taught us the importance of kindness and the value of being there for others. His gentle spirit and unwavering support created a safe haven for us all.
We’ll forever cherish our moments together. He showed us what it meant to live fully and love deeply, leaving behind a legacy of warmth that will resonate in our hearts forever.
As we remember him today, let us carry forward his spirit of generosity and love. Though he may no longer walk among us, his impact will endure in the stories we tell and the lives we lead. Thank you, Uncle Gordian for everything. You will always be missed, but your memory will shine brightly in our lives. May God lead you on as you journey on from this life to the next. Amen!

A TRIBUTE TO LATE CHIEF(SIR) GORDIAN CHUKWUEMEKA ORANIKA
Eternal rest grant him O Lord and let your perpetual light shine upon him. Amen. In the words
of Albert Einstein, a famous scientist, “The life of an individual has meaning only in so far as
it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful”. Chief G.C. Oranika,
OCHENDO, the mighty Umbrella, our very illustrious Old Boy was both an Inspiration and an
Institution. He was also a Role Model in every positive way.
It was Erma Bombeck, a famed American Journalist, Author and Humorist, who said that
“when I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single
bit of talent and could say “I used everything you gave me”. Chief Oranika excelled as a young
student in our College and completed his secondary school education, passing out in flying
colours, after four years instead of the standard five years in his time there. He went on to
receive good quality University education and grooming. He had a stellar Public Service
Career which was jeweled by several landmark accomplishments in the service of God and
humankind. As a Pioneer Director General and later renamed Permanent Secretary (1989–
1992) of the Federal Capital Territory, he oversaw the development and provision of
Engineering Infrastructure in the Maitama, Asokoro, Garki II and Wuse 2 Districts which
accelerated the development of these modern human settlements. He was also at various
times in his career, the Chairman of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme and Land
Allocation Committee in the Federal Capital Territory. During his service as the Director
General FCT, many government residential buildings, Schools, Churches, Mosques and
recreational arenas were built in Abuja. At the private and informal levels, he assisted
numerous persons across a broad spectrum with job opportunities, which were take off
points in their various careers and enriched their lives.
We remember with pride and gratitude that Chief G.C. Oranika, championed and worked
tirelessly for the establishment of Christ The King College, Gwagwalada, Abuja. It was an idea
that was conceived by His Eminence late Dominic Cardinal Ekandem, who was a very revered
Old Boy of our College. Chief Oranika’s efforts were instrumental to the successful raising of
funds for the School project. The Abuja Branch of the CKC Onitsha, Old Boys Association,
came into existence in 1990, due largely to his visionary leadership. He went as far as
providing the Old Boys a permanent Meeting Venue, pro bono in one of his hospitality
facilities. He was indeed a huge pillar of strength and support for our College and Old Boys
Association both in Abuja and Nationally.
Chief G.C. Oranika, embodied the finest attributes of being well born, well bred and well
educated. He lived out the Motto of our College i.e. Bonitas Disciplina Scientia which
translates as Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. He had the common touch, listening ears,
a communal spirit and an uncommon generosity. His outlook on life and living was most
admirable. He was the ideal Family Head, who led and nurtured by his shining talents and
examples. He was a thorough going adherent to the Catholic Faith and a KNIGHT of the
Church. For his dedicated and compassionate services to his community and larger society,
Chief Oranika was honoured severally. Of particular significance is the Chieftaincy Title of
OCHENDO bestowed on him by an appreciative Abatete Community, his hometown.
After retiring from the Public Service where he served meritoriously, Chief Oranika proved
to be a very enterprising and successful Entrepreneur. Integrity and honour were his
trademark in business.
It was Pericles, the great Athenian Military General, Politician, Statesman and Aristocrat, who
said that “what you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments but is woven
into the lives of others”. As Chief G.C. Oranika journeys into the ages, our prayer is that the
angels of God, will welcome and lead him into Paradise and the eternal rest, which he richly
deserves after his remarkable Odyssey here on Earth.
Adieu Distinguished Old Boy of CKC Onitsha. We are proud of your enduring and positively
impactful legacy.
Fare thee well Ochendo. May Almighty God comfort, console and heal your dear family and
all those, who you have now left behind. Amen.

TRIBUTES TO CHIEF GORDIAN CHUKWUEMEKA ORANIKA. 30.04.1935 to 3.05.2024.
Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika, those are the names given at birth to the man I
knew as my father in law, but to his children and myself including, he was known
as daddy, to his dear wife he was known as darling (that is all I have heard my
mother in law call him since the day I became their son in law), to others he was
known as Chief G.C. Oranika, and to the people of Abatete, Anambra and Igbo
land in general, he was known as Ochendo Abatete or Onwa Idenmili.
Whatever names or titles you may have known or addressed Chief Gordian
Chukwuemeka Oranika as, would most probably have been based on your
relationship with him, because it is evident that he was so many different things
to so many different people, and now that he has gone to be with the Lord, we are
beginning to realise that all those names and titles given to him on this earth was
not who he was, and whilst he identified with all those names and titles, it is
becoming clearer by the day that those names and titles were not his true
identity.
So who was the man Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika? In my humble
opinion, Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika was simply a bright light that lived
amongst us, and for those of us who were privileged to come in contact with him,
he shone his light for us to see, such that even if you were a blind man and you
came in contact with him, because of how bright his light shone, you will see his
light and you will feel his light, even the light that he received from our dear Lord
Jesus Christ, who lights every man that is coming into this world.
I doubt that there is anyone who knew him closely that can say that the bright
light that Christ put in the man they knew as Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika, did
not illuminate them or touch them in one form or another. There is no man
coming into this world that did not receive this light, and every man decides what
to do with the light that is in them during their time here on earth, and it is
evident to me that he must have made up his mind very early on in life, that he
was going to positively impact as many people as God brought his way with the
light that God has put in him.
Now that he has put off his physical flesh and put on his true nature in Christ,
many of us who were close to him have now begun to understand that the man
we knew as darling or daddy, or Ochendo Abatete, or Chief, was simply a man
that received the gift of light from Christ, and he was always willing to shine that
light on people’s situations and bring succour to many in the various ways that
he did.
John 1:8-9, “He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That
was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.”
I am not saying that Chief Oranika was that Light, what I am postulating is that
Chief Oranika was sent to bear witness of that Light, he was sent into this world
to bear witness of the true Light, which gives light to every man coming into the
world, and Chief Oranika did it in the capacity that God gave him and he did it to
the best of his ability.
One thing is undeniable about Chief Oranika, and that thing is that he brought joy
and happiness to all who crossed paths with him. He may not have been able to
heal the sick, but he used that which Christ gave him to pay the medical bills of
the sick, he may not have been able to feed five thousand with five loaves and
two fish but he fed thousands with the gift that Christ gave him.
It has become abundantly clear to me that he was preaching and living the gospel
of our dear Lord Jesus in his own gentle way, using the gift that God gave him in
this world. This is why all who knew him, will be quick to agree and testify of the
generosity and philanthropy that became synonymous with the name Chief G.C.
Oranika. His life and actions were teaching us, not by preaching but by
demonstrating the gospel of our dear Lord Jesus Christ to love our neighbour as
ourselves.
Examples abound of how he went about doing this, and time will fail me, if I were
to try to list them, but I am thankful to God that I have no need of doing that
because majority of us are beneficiaries of them.
Nonetheless, it is expedient for me to mention a few, so that I can give my own
account of the gentle colossus that I have come to love and respect.
To begin with, the way and manner in which he went about doing his charitable
deeds, can be likened to what our dear Lord Jesus Christ commanded us when He
said, “ Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing”, and I
believe that this saying encapsulates exactly how he went about his charitable
deeds.
There are things that he did for people, that no other human being on earth is
privy to, except him and the beneficiary of his charitable deed, such was the
character of the man. He was more concerned about how he gave, rather than
what he gave, and it did not matter to him if he was gifting you something of
great value, he always gave with the utmost humility and free of any fanfare, such
that in some cases, his family members are not even aware of his charitable acts,
because he would not mention it to anyone, and we only end up finding out from
the beneficiaries because they call us to ask that we help them thank Chief for
what he just did for them.
Later on, I discovered that the reason many of the beneficiaries of his generosity
called his family members to ask them to help thank Chief for what he had just
done for them, was because the moment Chief Oranika did a charitable deed for
anyone, he did not hang around to see the beneficiaries thanking him, and he
would have left before they started the thanksgiving ceremony to honour him.
Chief Oranika must have recognised from his very humble beginnings, that he
was not born with all the things that God so graciously blessed him with in this
world, and it is as though he had a pact with God to be a good custodian of all that
God has blessed him with for the benefit of others.
It is as though Chief Oranika was not living for himself, but he was living for
others, and the reason I say this is because the man never cared or bothered
about his own needs, and he was always concerned about the needs of others
above his own needs. Chief Oranika would never go out and buy himself a pair of
shoes or clothes and it is his dear wife and his children that will always sew
clothes for him or buy him shoes and he will always tell us without fail, that we
should stop wasting our money buying him things, but we should instead save
the money.
When we ask him why he does not want us to spend our money to buy him
things, his response was always the same, and he will tell us, and I quote, “ I have
too many clothes and shoes that I don’t even wear them, so why are you wasting
your money”. One memory that has never left me was the one about his white
Mercedes Benz, and I am sure that anyone who knows him must know that car.
This Mercedes Benz was that old one that became popular in the 80s, and yet in
the year 2010, Chief Oranika was still going everywhere with this Mercedes and
it became such a thorny issue at the time that the entire family would keep on
disturbing him to please change his car or upgrade it, but he would gladly buy
brand new cars for anyone who had need of a car, but he wanted everybody to
leave him and his beloved white Mercedes alone.
I am sure that it must have crossed the minds of some members of the family to
simply drive that car to a lonely road somewhere and just abandon it there with
the inscription, ‘You can have me, as long as you take me as far away from Abuja
as possible! Signed the family members of the owner’. But because he just had
such a fondness for that old banger of a car, none of us had the courage to do that.
Alas after years of nagging him, the family finally had its way and he had to ride
in an upgraded vehicle, but something tells me that it did not matter to Chief
Oranika if he was riding in an old banger with no air conditioning, or if he was
riding in the latest car on the market, he was the least materialistic man I have
come across despite the wealth that God blessed him with.
It was only in the bible that I read that Moses was the meekest man on earth, but
Chief Oranika is the meekest man that I have met on this earth, and I am yet to
meet a man whom God has blessed like him, that was as meek as he was. Since
the day I became his son in law till the day he went to be with the Lord, I have
never heard him raise his voice or shout, and I have never seen Chief Oranika
angry at anybody, even at people who wronged him and took advantage of his
gentle nature. He always maintained a very gentle disposition no matter the
circumstance and he always spoke in a calm and gentle voice in every situation.
Chief Oranika’s gift of meekness and his humility, is so profound that I earnestly
desire this gift. It was like the super power that God put in him, and he
demonstrated this unique gift effortlessly, like the air he was was breathing, this
is why I have concluded that the meekness and humility that was found in Chief
Oranika, is second only to the one I read in the bible about Moses.
Sir Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika was not perfect, none of us are, but he used
the gifts that God gave him in this world to the best of his ability, to touch as
many people as God brought his way, and in my estimation, he did an
outstanding work in the area where he was called, and he will give a good
account of his stewardship here on earth.
In conclusion, Chief Oranika may have been many things to many people, but to
us his family, he will always be remembered as darling daddy, because the man
whom his parents named Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika was indeed a darling
daddy in every sense of the word to us his family.
I miss you darling daddy, I miss your warm and infectious laughter and your
gentle smile, I miss your calm counsel, I miss watching Arsenal matches with you,
or you calling me to ask me what time the Arsenal game was on. I miss just being
around you, because most people I know do not like to spend so much time with
their father in law, but you were more than a father in law to me, you were
indeed a darling daddy and I miss you dearly.
I take comfort in the fact that in your final days you even drew closer to God, and
I know that our merciful God has received you in His bosom. Rest in peace
darling daddy, till we meet again in the Presence of our dear Lord Jesus Christ,
rest in peace.

The Pillar of Our Family: Remembering Uncle Ochendo
Dear Uncle Ochendo,
Words cannot express the depth of my emotions as I write this letter to you. Even though you departed from this world on May 3rd, 2024, your presence remains vivid in my heart and mind. You were more than an uncle to me; you were a mentor, a father figure, and a guiding light. Your attentiveness and thoughtfulness always made me feel valued and understood.
I will never forget how you would call me, sometimes at odd hours, just to check on my well-being. Those early morning conversations, sometimes as early as 6 a.m., are moments I will always treasure. Your advice to “always stay focused and keep saying your prayers” has become a rule of thumb that guides me daily. These moments, though small, have left a lasting impact on me, reminding me of the simple yet profound wisdom you carried.
One of my fondest memories is our trip in 2013 to Abatete with my late father. Despite the unexpected detour due to the early quirks of Google Maps, you remained calm and composed. Driving through that partially graded road for two hours could have been frustrating, but your positive spirit turned it into an adventure. Your courage and patience taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability. That day, I learned that the road ahead, no matter how uncertain, can always be faced with grace and a positive attitude.
Our days in Abuja are etched deeply in my memory. Driving around together in my simple, non-air-conditioned car, visiting building sites during the construction of Sandralia Hotel—you walked briskly through each room and hallway with such energy and meticulous attention to detail. You considered every input I made, despite your years of experience. Your passion for excellence was truly inspiring, and it made me strive to be the best version of myself, no matter the task at hand.
You had a sweet tooth that matched your sweet nature. Sharing cakes, chocolates, and candies wasn’t just about enjoying the treats; it was a reflection of your generous spirit. Watching Arsenal matches with you, sitting right in front of the TV on a dining chair, was always a lively affair filled with subtle discussions and shared excitement. These shared moments, filled with laughter and connection, have left me with cherished memories that warm my heart even now.
Your dedication to staying informed always impressed me. Reading the national dailies every day and keeping up with the Abatete Development Organization’s latest news through the WhatsApp platform demonstrated your commitment to community and culture. You made it a point to attend important occasions—child dedications, weddings, funerals, and more—sometimes juggling multiple events in a single day just to honor those who invited you. Your sense of duty and loyalty to others never ceased to amaze me.
Professionally, your accomplishments were monumental. Serving as the Permanent Secretary and the first Director General of the FCTA and FCDA, you were instrumental in extending Abuja’s master plan. Your efforts didn’t just shape a city; they created opportunities for countless individuals, including helping many secure land for shelter and finance for their education and businesses. You built not just structures but futures, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and growth for generations to come.
Your faith was a cornerstone of your life. As a Knight of St. Mulumba and St. Sylvester, you were a pillar in the Catholic Church. Building a church in Abatete and contributing to numerous religious and community projects showcased your devotion and generosity. The University Tower at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, built in honor of your parents—my beloved grandparents—stands as a testament to your love for family and the academic world. You built bridges between heaven and earth through your selfless service and deep devotion.
After my father passed away, you seamlessly stepped in as a father figure without hesitation. You ensured my business thrived and that our family remained safe. Your constant check-ins, guidance, and support meant the world to me. You taught me the importance of humility, focus, and the value of hard work. In moments when I felt overwhelmed, your wisdom and steady hand were there to guide me, reminding me that no challenge was insurmountable.
You were like a mighty oak tree, with branches spreading wide to provide shade and shelter to many. You were fondly called Ochendo, a name that followed and extolled your virtues. Your silent achievements and the lives you touched are a legacy that words can scarcely capture. You brought our family together, caring not just for our immediate relatives but extending your kindness to the extended family and community. Your generosity and strength were the roots that held us all together.
As I reflect on your remarkable life, I am filled with both sorrow for your absence and gratitude for your presence in my life. You taught me so much—not just through your words, but through the way you lived your life with integrity, compassion, and unwavering faith. Your life was a living example of what it means to truly care for others, to give without expecting anything in return, and to stand firm in the face of adversity.
I want you to know that I will strive to keep your light burning bright, to live by the principles you’ve instilled in me, and to honor your memory in all that I do. I will carry forward the lessons you taught me, living each day with the grace and dignity you embodied. Your legacy is a guiding light that will continue to inspire me and many others.
Thank you, Uncle Ochendo, for everything you’ve been to me. I miss you dearly, but I find comfort in knowing that your spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you. Rest in peace, dear uncle. Your life was a blessing, and your memory will forever be a treasure.
With all my love and deepest respect,

Tribute to a Great Man-G.C. Oranika Ochendo Abatete 1935-2024
As his Chieftancy title suggests “Ochendo” actually held that wide umbrella which provided the shade leading to uplifting of the lives of many Oranika family members and citizens of our Great town Abatete and many more across the width and breath of Nigeria in general.
On a more personal note when Ochendo returned from Manchester after his advanced degree studies in England he relocated to Suru Lere and on one of his trips to Abatete he picked me up from home informing me that I will be staying with him in Suru Lere-Adelabu street I still remember.
After we got to Lagos he told me that he had secured a job for me at National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) on Marina Street Lagos. I just graduated from High School and this was my first job. It was a great experience living with him and his family I remember plays I had with small and lovely Chinwe Ogbatue (Iyom Odueze) when she was a baby. I was very grateful to Ochendo for his kindness to me. I lived with him and his family for about 2 years. The point here is that Ochendo was a mentor to me and he created an opportunity for me for other accomplishments I made in my life and for this I am ever grateful to him. He sponsored a Chieftancy title for me at Abatete and hence I accepted and took the title of “Ugwu Nwanne Amaka”
Chief G.C. Oranika had a Federal Civil Service career and held many leadership positions which culminated in his appointment as the Minister for Federal Capital Development Authority in charge of development of the newly created Federal Capital city-Abuja
He made significant contributions to the landscape and infrastructure and buildings of the city of Abuja which today stands as a testament to Ochendo’s hard work and sacrifices to Nigeria and the Capital City development.
As we mourn the loss of our great father Ochendo, we celebrate his life and great many accomplishments he made. The Oranika family and future generations will ever be grateful for the legacies he left behind. He achieved every goal he had in life and we shall take his passing in the words of William Shakespeare ” All the World is a stage and all the men and women are merely players, they have their exits and entrances and one man in his time plays many parts his acts being seven stages. Your passing has left an unhealable ache within me. Ochendo Abatete, my beloved ‘Big Daddy’, as I fondly called you, I cherish the memories of your warmth and hospitality. As the wife of your late brother, George Oranika (Castro G), may his memory be blessed, you welcomed me into your family with open arms, making me feel at home from day one. Your unconditional love and kindness towards me and my family will stay in my heart forever.
I long to see you once more, to hear your voice, but it’s now a cherished memory. I can’t explain how much I miss you. You were full of faith, courage, and strength. You meant everything to the family.
As you go on your eternal journey, I bid you farewell. You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Ochendo Abatete, Onwa Idemili, Ebekuedike of Awka, Ugwumba of Emekuku, Anyaghaligwe of Abuja.

Tribute to Ochendo Abatete from Nneka Okorie
To my uncle of blessed memory, your death came as a huge blow to me. You were a great pillar to the family. You were our pride. I looked up to you in many ways and marveled at your quiet strength, dedication, generosity, and sense of duty. You always seemed larger than life but your humanity was outstanding. Your influence opened doors for many.
Our brief conversations were always inspiring. You would ask my wellbeing, my family, and academics. This spurred my determination to succeed. The job I had at Fidelity Bank was activated by you calling the then MD of Fidelity Bank, whom you had a cordial relationship with. I remember your words, “my niece is very smart, she has a 2:1, give her a job at your bank”. A week later, after scaling through the tests and interviews successfully, I resumed at a prestigious department in the bank. You embodied excellence and kindness, a Roman Catholic to the core. Thank you for everything.

A TRIBUTE TO A RARE GEM – OCHENDO ABATETE!!!
The news of your departure came to me with a rude shock that shocked me down to my spine.
Infact, it coincidentally happened on my Birthday, 3rd May which was supposed to be a day
of joy, merry and Thanksgiving to God for another opportunity to witness my birthday. But the
news of your demise automatically changed the narrative. To say that I was shattered, confused
and devastated was an understatement. My grieve and cries was uncontrollable, because you
were my all in all. You were everything to me, infact, without you there is no me today.
Everything I have become today, you made it possible. I see you as my second God, after God
Almighty. You never allowed me and my siblings to ever feel that we are orphans.
OCHENDO ABATETE, you were a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and an
accomplished statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire all those whose lives you
touched. Your departure has left a deep void, but I am strongly comforted in the fact that I
already aware that you are in Heaven. You were the best Uncle anyone could have wished for.
You started taking care of me since from my inception till the very day you gave up. You were
one in a Billion. God fearing, generous, jovial, always happy and cheerful, super caring, a peace
lover, kind to a fault and loved by All. Your generosity knows no bound, hence your name
ONWA NA ETILI ORA.
I know we will all go someday, but your departure left an indelible mark in me. OCHENDO,
your life is definitely a blessing, and your memory, a treasure that I will forever behold. Rest
on peacefully in God’s Bosom, Sweet Uncle. And if I am to do life again, I will choose you as
my uncle. I deeply missed you.

Tribute from Chief Innocent and Lolo Mercy Uwakwe
My wife and I are sad to hear of the exit of Sir Gordian Oranika. Gordian and I grew up in Port Harcourt as great and bossom friends after school. We lived on the same street – no. 1 & 3 Crowther. He was a gentle and sincere friend. We were employed by the United Africa Company (UAC) where he was a most efficient worker whose analysis was relied on.
We eventually went to Britain for further studies, Gordian to St. Andrew’s Scotland where he read Classics, and me to Mancheser where I studied Economics. While in the UK Gordian often vacationed with us in Manchester.
On Gordian’s return to Nigeria he joined the Federal Civil Service and made significant contributions to the building of the Federal Capital Territory and Abuja. He continued to be a good friend. When he was at NIPSS in Kuru he would often visit me and my family in Jos as I would visit him in Abuja.
Gordian was an ardent Christian and because of it he went out of his way to help others. He was knighted by the Pope in recognition of his commitment to Christ. He was one of my longest standing friends and will be greatly missed. Adieu good Sir!

My entire family will forever give God glory for your eventful and accomplished life.
Since we became close to each other in 1976, you had always distinguished yourself as a man of admirable and sterling qualities, caring brother inlaw and an inspiring leader.
You touched our lives and lives of so many others tremendously and mentored us greatly.

You were humble, hardworking, unassuming, intelligent, kind, unique and reliable. You were an epitome of peace and transparency. Your simplicity and honesty knew no bounds. You advised and guided us wisely.
You lived a practical Christian life. You always and willingly provided succour and help to the poor and less privileged members of the society.
You were a great asset to the Catholic faith and many other organisations.
Ochendo, your transition to the new abode left a void in us that no one can ever fill. We are greatly pained but grateful to God.
May God grant your family the comfortand fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

Tribute To Ochendo
“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ has conquered death, so have we. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 “We should not grieve as those who have no hope.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13 For, when the trumpet 🎺 of God will sound, those who have died will receive their resurrected bodies; and the living will be caught up to join them to be with the Lord forever. Ochendo, you lived a long life and accomplished what God graced you to do. However, I never expected you to go and meet your maker at this time. You have touched so many lives and helped so many tremendously. How many will I count? It can never be quantified. – Motherless Homes – Less Previlaged – Old women – Homes for homeless – Oranika families everywhere they are. You always listened to all their problems, always provided solutions and showered everyone with love. You have helped all the above and more. May you find peace in the bossom of the Lord Jesus Christ. You are love yesterday, today and always. Go in peace, beloved Uncle Chief Goddy Oranika Ochendo.

TRIBUTE TO LATE CHIEF G.C. ORANIKA(OCHENDO)
Received the news with mixed feelings and grief. The great man, most humble person on earth, a Philanthropist and a father, I call him a father because when I thought that all was lost, he came to me and asked me to come to Abuja, it took me time to relocate from Enugu to Abuja especially when I consider the type of friends and life, Eddy you cannot speak Hausa, where are you going to stay? But this God sent man did all these things for me not only giving me a job, but provided shelter for me. He touched the lives of many abatete indigens, I remember when I was the financial secretary of ADO Abuja, we used to run from one secondary school to another in search of where to hold our monthly meetings because the FCT Education board gave notices banning town unions from holding meetings inside the school compound, it became a serious problem and we had to run to “Ochendo” who gave out his personal land and money an that was the success of Abatete guest house today. Ochendo lived a very good, peaceful and quiet life worthy of emulation, it is really painful that we are losing him at this point in time when we needed his useful advice. May his soul rest in peace.

A Tribute by Dr. P.Oranika
Dear Uncle, Ochendo,
I fondly remember how you graciously allowed me to address you as “Uncle.” In Ngwa Land, we honor our elders by using the term “Dede,” but recognizing that this wasn’t the custom in Abatete, you welcomed my affectionate title. Your acceptance of me into the Oranika family and the broader Umuebo Agbaja Abatete community touched my heart.
My first encounter with your name came through the late Big John, a friend of my late husband. After our church wedding in 1992, Big John visited our apartment and asked if we were related to you. My husband confirmed it, and Big John wondered why we weren’t living large in Abuja, with you at the helm of affairs. It was news to me, and I was curious to learn more.
In 2000, Chike brought me and our three children to pay homage to you and Auntie Dr. Uche (Ugodiya) in Abuja. Your warm welcome made us feel like family. From then on, whenever I called from the U.S. or visited Nigeria, you affectionately addressed me as “Ezigbonwa.”
At Papa Onyeka’s burial (the late Obi Oranika), your kindness stood out. You ensured my family received special seating and hospitality—an act befitting an elder kinsman. The day after the funeral, when Chike and I hosted the entire family, you arrived with the kindred. Your humility and lack of arrogance impressed me. When Late Solibe asked me to serve you locally roasted chicken, I hesitated, but your approving smile encouraged me. I broke the chicken with my bare hands, humbled and honored to serve you.
Our paths crossed again at the wedding of one of Papa Okey’s daughters. I called ahead to let you and Auntie know I was in Nigeria. At the wedding reception, you hugged me affectionately, calling me “Ezigbonwa.” You instructed the younger family member to arrange a table for me and my friends. Your thoughtfulness exemplified the essence of an elder kinsman.
Time and space limit my ability to recount all our interactions but know this: we will miss you dearly. You and my husband Chike departed this world within days of each other, leaving indelible marks. Rest in peace, Uncle Ochendo. We love you.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Dr. Patience Oranika, for

TRIBUTE TO LATE NWADIANI CHIEF SIR G.C ORANIKA (OCHENDU ABATETE)
It was with a heavy heart that we received the news of your passing. Your mother from Umuezeaya Kindred of Enuogbu na Urudunu Community Ogbu Abatete was our darling daughter we bequeathed to your father Chief Oranika of Agbaja Abatete and you were her first son.
We watched you grow up to be a very important person in Abatete and Nigeria in general. You rose to the first permanent secretary in the newly created Federal Capital Territory Abuja. There, you proved your mettle and attracted many Igbos and Nigerians to Abuja to build up the nascent Federal Capital Territory. You were of great help to our people who today are proud property owners in Abuja.
In Abatete, you were conferred with the prestigious Title: Ichie Okaka OCHENDO ABATETE. Back in our Umuezeaya Family, you rehabilitated our brother Okafor Francis (Oka Franzy) and built a magnificent storey building for him in Enuogbu na Urudunu Community and took charge of training of his children.
We mourn you with nostalgia and hope in accordance with the Holy scripture in John14: 2-3, 1Cor. 15:51-52, and Rev. 21:4 that one day, we shall meet to part no more.

A TRIBUTE TO A RARE GEM!! OCHENDO ABATETE!!
A TRIBUTE TO A RARE GEM – OCHENDO ABATETE!!!
The news of your departure came to me with a rude shock that shocked me down to my spine. Infact, it coincidentally happened on my Birthday, 3rd May which was supposed to be a day of joy, merry and Thanksgiving to God for another opportunity to witness my birthday. But, the news of your demise automatically changed the narrative. To say that I was shattered, confused and devastated was an understatement. My grieve and cries was uncontrollable, because you were my all in all. You were everything to me, infact, without you there is no me today. Everything I have become today, you made it possible. I see you as my second God, after God Almighty. You never allow me and my siblings to ever feel that we are orphans.
OCHENDO ABATETE, you were a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle and an accomplished statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire all those whose lives you touched. Your departure has left a deep void, but I am strongly comforted in the fact that I already aware that you are in Heaven. You were the best Uncle anyone could have wished for. You started taking care of me since from my inception till the very day you gave up. You were one in a Billion. God fearing, generous, jovial, always happy and cheerful, super caring, a peace lover, kind to a fault and loved by All. Your generosity knows no bound, hence your name ONWA NA ETILI ORA.
I know we will all go someday, but your departure left an indelible mark in me. OCHENDO, your life is definitely a blessing, and your memory, a treasure that I will forever behold. Rest on peacefully in God’s Bosom, Sweet Uncle. And if I am to do life again, I will choose you as my Uncle. I deeply missed you.

Tribute to Chief G.C Oranika KSS, KSM, MNI (Ochendo Abatete, Onwa Idemili) Former Director General, Federal Capital Territory
Our Prayers go out to our dear brother, father, grandfather and Uncle, Chief Gordian Chukwuemeka Oranika (Ochendo Abatete, Onwa Idemili) who has journeyed to be with the
Saints, he was loved by all of us and he will be cherished in our memories forever.
May the love and mercy of our Lord be bestowed upon Chief G.C Oranika and his family during
this special time. Chief G.C Oranika was a Catholic faithful in all ramification with his
philanthropy next to none. St. Agnes Catholic Church will always remember Chief G.C Oranika
for touching the lives of all the Parishioners especially as he made it possible for them to have a
worship ground. He was dedicated to the Church of God, supporting the Church and always there
when called upon. It is our belief that Chief Oranika is with the Lord.
Our Lord Jesus said in John 5:24 that “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes
him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
To the family we remind you that no one can prepare you for this loss, words cannot begin to
express the sadness you are feeling right now, but take comfort in knowing that Chief G.C Oranika
is now resting in the arms of our Lord, for the Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 that:
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so
that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus
died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen
asleep in him.” Wc are therefore consoled by our belief and conviction that when we lose such
an ardent believer and dedicated Christian as Chief G.C Oranika here on earth, we gain an angel
in heaven.
Eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his souland the
souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace Amen.

The pain of your death is inexpressible too painful for words. I am yet to come to terms that you are no more, most times it seemed like a very long dream. The life you lived is not something that can be written in few pages or chapters, it is an awesome legacy that lives on.
All through my growing life you have played a role of a Lovely father, uncle and brother to me, now that you are gone who will I run to any time I am broke. You have never shared anything without asking for Chika to come and take her own, you are always there for me anytime I need your help. We cannot question God, my consolation is that you lived well because you touched lives positively, to me you are not dead you live on, you were an embodiment of kindness, love, peace and everything good.
